About the 2008 Seminar for ES Teachers

With an emphasis on helping teachers become competent, efficient, and creative designers of their own curriculum materials, this 3 - 4 credit summer seminar presents participants with a detailed cross section of New York State related earth science content: meteorology, astronomy, and geology. Participants will cooperatively develop and discuss their ideas, and emphasis is placed on the exploration of internet sources of activities, information, and real-time data. The seminar includes 2 or 3 full day field trips to local areas of interest, including an exploration of Cameron's Line on the Housatonic River and a visit to the Triassic basin of the Connecticut River. The course also includes an extended full day field trip to Kaaterskill Falls and North Lake in the Eastern Catskills. Field trip topics include weathering and erosion systems (including stream processes and Quaternary geology), local geology and geologic history, topographic map interpretation, structural geology, and the use of GPS. ESRT charts and diagrams are incorporated into field trip and class content as well. Finally, various classroom methods and techniques are demonstrated and discussed throughout the course.
